English 原文
“Has that clock face always been lemon-gold?” Fenna said, pointing through the gondola window. Her sketchbook already held three small versions of it, squared off by habit and neat corners. She set the paper on the lacquered bench, braced the pad with her thumb, and drew the circle again. The pencil met the page’s grain and caught on it, a rough snag that left a pale, stuttering arc. A faint vibration moved through the floor each time the wheel advanced; the line shivered where she wanted calm. She paused with the point hovering, exhaled, then tried to firm the edge, and the motion wavered yet again. Her hand rested, and the sketchbook closed against her palm with a soft thump.
She leaned into the bench’s warmth and fogged the window with a breath, an oval that softened from the center outward. Her fingertip traced a path through the damp, and a clear line opened, widening as the moisture pulled away to the edges. Below, families moseyed past the stalls in unhurried loops, the platform’s rectangular doormat showing a darker stripe where many soles had passed. A vendor’s wand lifted iridescent bubbles that rose, turned, and burst against the evening air, silver one moment, green the next. An awed “ooh” drifted up from somewhere near the queue, faint and round like the very sound a bubble makes. The gondola’s pivot corrected a small tilt, and the seat answered with a gentle swing she read through her soles. She watched the railing catch a new angle of light while the wheel seemed to stall at the top’s long, easy beat.
Marco tapped the opposite pane with his knuckle and pointed toward the tower’s minute hand, the gesture small and exact against the glass. “There—almost straight up now,” he said, voice low enough to stay inside the cabin. He reached to hand over a napkin from his pocket, and she pressed it to the glass, then to her fingertips, drying the chill. Her index finger returned to the fog’s last remnant and drew a slow arc, not a ruler’s edge at all, but steady in its curve. The motion in her hand carried into the pencil when she lifted the sketchbook again, the circle forming by small, joined bends. Wind pressed lightly at one side of the cabin; the floor held level, and the pencil’s weight found a calmer travel along the paper.
A cloud crossed the sun, and the clock face below cooled from lemon toward brass, the numerals deepening as if dipped in shadow. The same tower she kept tracing now met her eye as a different arrangement of light and edge, the corners less certain and more alive. Marco breathed out once, and the wheel’s slow forward pull returned, bringing the chatter below into focus without hurrying the cabin at all. The fairground smell of fried dough and cut grass rose as the wheel eased forward. The cool damp on her fingertip lingered.
