English 原文
Etta watched a single wader, bright green and upright, stand half-buried beside the thawing pond. Mud gripped the boot's ribbed rubber in a tight cuff, its toe aimed at the shrinking white center. Between granite bank stones, meltwater trickled steadily, pooling where the bank dipped and sliding under the opaque, granular ice. A thin sheet of water shivered atop the ice when a passing cloud thinned and the sunlight widened briefly. A birch tip brushed the open water and sent rings outward, while a crow drank on the far stone and lifted off once. Beyond the near edge, a tract of pale reeds stood, their stalks leaning toward dark water curving around the pond’s bright center. A narrow brown line lay half-buried near the wader, twine disappearing under a pebble and reappearing by a reed.
She stepped from the path onto a dry patch by the bank stone and crouched, palm against the cold air rising off the water. The ice at the margin crackled faintly as she pressed a finger to its edge and watched thin lines widen toward the center. Erik waited a pace back, coat open, breath visible; he tilted his head and said, “It sounds busy today,” then folded the cup into his pocket. Etta slid her fingers around the wader’s rim; the rubber gave a little, and the mud held with a suction that dampened her sleeve. She paused, pondering the brown line she had noticed, its frayed end lying against grit, then returned her hand to a steadier, more resolute grip. A bubble rose under the candle ice and popped softly, a brief wink that left the thin sheet trembling and then smooth again.
She rocked the wader once, twice, slow at first, then firmer, until the mud’s cuff loosened and released it with a low, glugging sound. Rinsing the boot in the open water cleared a film of silt, and the hidden twine slid free from its pebble and lifted in a slack loop. She set the wader on the surface near the retreating edge, and it stood upright, buoyant, tipping only enough to sip water through two small seams. Knots punctuated the twine at neat intervals, each darkened where wet touched, a plain measure resting against her wrist as the float bobbed. “Hear that tinkling?” Erik said, as the candle ice needles brushed each other and clicked; his voice stayed low, more statement than suggestion. Etta lifted the string to the next knot and waited, then lowered it again; the wader steadied against the reed, settling at that exact depth.
She raised the wader half a handspan, considered the slack in the line, and then eased it back until the knots kissed the reed again. Steps carried her to the path where she had been standing, meltwater filtering between the same bank stones that framed the first still pool. The nearer bank stone, earlier only a perch for watching, now showed a damp crescent along its base and a drier, sun-warmed grit across its crown. She set her palm on that bank stone, feeling fine sand press lightly against her skin as the trickle kept its patient course below.
