English 原文
"That red one is just above me."
Pascal set his basket against his hip and rose onto the first rung of the short ladder. Coins of warm light moved over the branch, and the primacy of sunlight showed from russet tips to pale bases. Leaves rubbed together with a dry whisper as the limb swayed, nudging the apple just beyond his fingertips. He steadied the trunk with one hand and gave the apple a slow twist until the stem released. Below, a haphazard scatter of windfalls lay in the grass, with wasps circling the softest ones without hurry. The ladder’s feet sank a finger into damp soil, so he stepped down and shifted them onto a firmer patch. His parent watched from the path, humming, while other pickers moved along neighboring rows with steady baskets. He looked again toward a higher cluster, then nodded to himself and said, "Two more, then I carry this." He lowered each apple carefully into the canvas-lined basket, which grew heavier and pressed a faint stripe into his shirt.
At the sorting table near the gate, bright glare lay across the sunward boards, and the painted sections stretched along the surface. He set three apples on the "ripe" side, yet one rolled over the ridge and settled among "almost" instead. He frowned and tried another, which also drifted, and then noticed the divider line was a finger-width off center. The sun-facing half had swelled a little during the long season, tilting the surface like a shallow ramp. He considered turning the table around, or parking the empty basket as a barrier, but both would block the next picker. Instead, he pulled a square of linen from his pocket, folded it tight, and wedged it under the sunward leg. The tilt eased enough for the apples to stay put, and he marked the tally with a short charcoal stick. Pascal lifted the basket again and headed back between rows where light lay in warm bands across the grass. Under the gate-side foot, the folded linen made a small rise that held the corner steady. A faint charcoal thumbprint smudged the wood beside the slanted divider, darker than the sun-faded varnish.
