Cedric sat nearby, shaping a thin strip of leather with steady hands. "There you are," he said, and his voice stayed easy in the quiet room. With one slow stroke, he brushed glue along the leather edge and set it aside. The cat hooked a claw under the band and pulled until the loop thinned and trembled. It slipped off a small dent in the tin catch, and the mesh door sprang wide. The door bumped the wooden shutter, and the latch spring quivered and gave a low keynote. The soft hum hung under the other sounds, and the cat froze with ears high. "It's open," Cedric said, watching the mesh swing and slow.

The band curled near its paws and kept a faint twist, but the door stayed half turned. The cat batted once, and the thin wire hinge flexed and drew the door back toward the frame. It left the band hanging and turned away from the door and the humming latch. A square of canvas offcut lay under a stool, stretched tight across a small wooden ring. The cat stepped to it and pressed a paw until the cloth bowed, then bounced.
