Owen pulled the kitchen cabinet door open and reached up.

The blue cups sat on the back of the shelf. Morning light fell across the long counter. Rhea stood by the table with a picnic bag.

Owen tried to judge the distance with his hand. His fingers tapped a plastic lid, and the lid slid. It bumped a stack of plates; a metal spoon fell. The spoon hit the floor with a quick ping. "That was loud," Rhea said, picking up the spoon. She slid a short story she wrote into a zip bag.

Owen lowered his arm and closed the cabinet for now. He opened the small cooler to start packing snacks. A wooden block sat inside, next to two ice packs. He set the block under the open door as a wedge.

He moved the front bowls to the counter before the cups. Then he reached back and lifted the blue cups down. He stacked them neatly and placed them inside the cooler. Rhea set her bag with the story on top. Owen pressed the lid and clicked the latches shut.
