She held a clear jar and came to explore. A small field notebook for pond knowledge sat in her bag. A low rope marked the border of the wooden dock.

She leaned carefully over it to dip the jar. Her shoe pressed a loose board near a small bucket. The board tipped a little; the bucket slid and bumped light lids. The lids rattled, and one fell into the cold water.

A frog landed on the floating lid with a plop. Ripples spread and nudged the lid toward the shallow bank. "A frog, right there," Clyde said, pointing at the ring. Cool air lightly touched Rosa's wrists under the rope.

Rosa shifted two steps left along the narrow wooden planks. She crouched by a lower step and reached from there. Her thin arm slid easily under the rope this time. She dipped the clear jar and drew up water slowly. She slid the jar into the soft side pocket of her bag.
