English 原文
Sian stood in the courtyard doorway and watched a damp, paw-shaped mark soften on the snow-dusted flagstone.
A thin runnel from the block traced toward it, then stalled, leaving a darker bead that shifted whenever the sun slipped from a cloud.
Across the wooden platform, a focused bar of light already crossed and moved on, its slow sweep like a deliberate turnstile nobody touched.
Palmer worked beside the block, his wooden mallet rising and falling in even arcs that sent brief flurries of chips spinning outward and then settling.
Between two strikes, an intermission arrived, and the only motion came from the drip at the base and the slow breath fogging their scarves.
A crow tilted its head on the wall; beyond the gate, a real turnstile clicked once and then stopped as footsteps faded on packed snow.
Sian stepped closer, noticing a steel bracket on the platform whose dull green tarnish smudged the grain where countless winters had pressed salt and air.
She slid on the insulated gloves while Palmer set the flat chisel along a scored line and steadied it with two fingers at the rounded handle’s base.
“Here,” he said, not moving the blade, and Sian’s wrist found the swing that let the mallet land square with a clean, bright crack.
The chisel bit; a crescent lifted; the clear face clouded to white frost as air reached it, and the block’s inner blue deepened where it stayed thick.
The beam entering one face shifted again, its bar crawling toward the damp mark, crossing her boot, then sliding away before it reached the stain.
She raised the mallet for another strike, hovered, then lowered it without contact, her palm flat on the ice to read the cold through the glove.
A hesitation stretched, not empty, because drip intervals shortened and the carved grooves began to scatter light differently from the smooth face beside them.
“It’s firm,” Palmer said, easing his hand away; Sian wedged her shoulder to the block, and together they shifted it a finger’s width on the platform.
The moving mass swung the beam across the flagstones, and the bright bar settled on a fresh patch where the snow glossed darker in a slow oval.
The earlier paw worked as a clumsy metaphor only for a moment; the floor now carried a lens-made print shaped by light, meltwater, and patience.
Sian set the chisel shallower, an insightful change in angle that smoothed a channel, and the beam bent through that pane to brighten the courtyard wall.
She lifted the mallet once more and sent a neat tap through the wood.
A fan of ice chips sailed outward in a bright, weightless arc, casting tiny sparks across the snow.
