Nell kneels by a hollow log. She peers into the driftwood hollow. Her knees press warm dry sand. The rim is rough and pale. Salt lines still cling inside. A closed lunch rests on a towel. Trees on it make a forest. A beach shop bucket stands beside the driftwood.

Nell steps to a rock gap. The grandmother sits on a flat rock. "I see a small crab," she says. Nell looks through the narrow space. Water shines and hides the floor. Wet bird prints make a path. They fill slowly with seeping water.

Nell walks to the boardwalk planks. She stands and looks through a slit. Fine sand drifts between the gaps. Her toes rest on warm wood. A small beetle clicks across the gap.
