English 原文
Seth stepped through the bay door, and warm air pressed his cheeks while the furnace’s pale core brightened the floor in a narrow band.
Across the open floor, Colette rolled a glowing gather along the steel marver, and the instant its side kissed that flat cold, the wobble steadied and the round began to hold.
A shallow basin under the bench held dark wooden blocks, their rims glossy with moisture that shone like varnish in the heat glare.
When Colette lifted one block and let it ride the spinning glass, steam burst thinly and left a flat facet that caught a midtone of honey before sliding back toward clear flame.
Amber at the edge seemed to merge into pale yellow near the center, and the slow rotation kept gravity from tugging the form off its axis.
Two low rails beneath the marver facilitate quiet, inching moves of the pipe stand, and their faint scrape timed each pass like a metronome on metal.
A wasp looped near the glory hole, hesitated at the lip, and left through the brighter square of the open door.
Colette’s jacks touched and lifted, and a neat crease grew along the neck as the pipe turned, the steel tips clicking once when she set them down.
Seth’s fingers curled on the viewing bench, and he leaned forward as the smell of scorched wood braided with mineral heat under the steady hiss.
Near his knee, a cool practice pipe waited with a thin strip of tissue taped close to its far end, the paper hanging straight like a white reed.
“Room temperature,” Colette said, her voice low over the creak of the cradle.
Seth slid the pipe into his palms, felt the surprising weight settle across his thumbs, and raised the mouthpiece until metal met his lower lip.
His first breath arrived too fast, and he stopped short, shoulders tightening as the tissue flickered and fell still before he could watch it properly.
He shifted his grip, set his elbows near his ribs, and held a smaller lungful at the back of his mouth like air saved in a cup.
A bell outside struck the half-hour, its softened note slipping through the hot room while the furnace glow stayed even at the edges.
He breathed again, slow through the pipe, and the tissue lifted, trembled, and leaned away from him as a faint fog ring formed inside the cool tube.
Seth tilted the pipe toward the furnace light, and the pale circle on the inner metal blurred, then cleared, the condensation thinning the way the marver stripe had thinned on the turning glass.
He glanced back across the floor at the flat on the gather and then at the wet block returning to its basin, the details stacking until his hands stilled and held the pipe at the same careful angle.
Colette set down her shears, and a quiet clicked across the marver while the bowl-in-the-making turned on, the neck crease sharpening one slow millimeter at a time.
Seth kept his lips sealed around the mouthpiece, and his breath went steady, a thread he could feel more than hear as it traveled the length of cool metal.
The tissue at the far end kept moving, a white sliver still lifting along the pipe’s line.

- midtone
“The cooled facet caught a midtone of honey, then drifted brighter as the gather returned to heat.”
- facilitate
“Low rails beneath the marver facilitate small, silent adjustments of the stand, keeping each pass measured and calm.”
- merge
“At slow rotation, amber at the rim seemed to merge into paler yellow toward the breathing center.”
- moisture
“A thin shine of moisture rimmed the block, so steam whispered when it touched the rolling glass.”
- basin
“The shallow basin by the bench held the wet blocks, keeping them ready for the next turn.”
