English 原文
Glare thinned, then brightened, as a passing ripple stretched across the channel’s narrow span.
Beside that bend sat the rounded coral they had already passed twice along this shallow loop.
Heath anchored a glass-bottom viewer above it, aiming to outline each ledge and hollow onto his waterproof slate.
Sunlight flickered fast, and the surface kept a syncopation that broke edges into shifting zigzags beneath the square frame.
A low lap slid the viewer a hand’s width off center, and he retrieved it with two careful lifts and resets.
His pencil hovered, then stopped; the bright patch moved again, and the outline he chased refused to hold still.
He set the slate on a dry rock shelf and stepped along the pool’s rim to count its spans.
Lyra mirrored him at the far side, working the same arc from the opposite corner of that clear oval.
Between coral heads, the sandy corridor narrowed, then opened, a shaped hallway whose roof was the stilling surface itself.
Heath tested the turn where the channel met a shallow descent, measuring the clearance from rim to rim with slow, even paces.
A parrotfish grazed beyond the bend, and its white dust drifted through open water without altering the pool’s geometry.
He traced a wide arc in the damp sand at his feet, then another inside it, leaving a thin ringed map.
His hand paused above the third ring, and his gaze slid back toward the mounded coral at the bend.
Through the viewer, terraces stepped around a healed notch, like an arboretum laid flat and pruned by waves and time.
Lyra said, “It is wider here,” pointing to the shelf that seemed to float halfway between rim and crown.
“And thinner near that corner,” Heath answered, holding the viewer square over the step that rounded into the channel.
The colony’s edges showed grazing scars smoothed to ledges, a spiral of rebuild and break that made rooms out of water.
What had looked like a boulder now arranged itself as stacked porches, each one catching light at a slightly different angle.
Heath returned to the sand sketch and added narrow steps between rings to match the coral’s offset shelves and winding corridors.
A kernel of shell sat half-buried near the outer ring, small, triangular, and fixed within its little depression.
“It holds the corner,” Lyra said, and he smiled without lifting it; the pattern read well enough without moving anything.
They set the viewer beside the drawing, its square edge aligning with a ring so the geometry above mirrored the geometry below.
At the channel’s mouth, a longer swell crossed the reef’s low span and slid inward, carrying a thin sheet over the sand map.
Water reached the first arc and began to unlace it, while the stacked porches under the square window held their light.
