A Shift of Light on the Mud Nest and a Folded Flyer -

English 原文
The oldest mud cup under the eaves held a thickened rim, its dried spill curving downward like an abstract delta frozen against the beam.
Afternoon warmth lifted resin from the boards, and the scent braided with dry grass and the faint mineral of pellet edges.
Beside that cup, the newer rim looked wetter in tone, while the freshest nest nearer the corner showed bright-dark mud still holding a faint mustiness.
A pale chorus rose from the high cup, brief and even, then faded as small throats closed.
Hattie stood inside the doorway, one shoulder against the frame, a folded flyer in her hand still creased from fanning a cooling bowl.
The house breathed stew and a soft note of smoke; the yard answered with wood near sun, earth under shade, and a thin stripe of brine.
“The boards are warm today,” the older companion said from the hinge, voice low and unhurried.
“And something like clay after rain,” Hattie said, tilting her nose toward the beam without moving her feet.
She lifted the flyer enough to make a whisper of air, then paused as a parent skimmed the corner and settled on the higher rim.
Her wrist adjusted inward, the paper angled toward herself, and the tiny draft stayed with her body instead of reaching the nests.
Her heels stayed firm on the cool tile, and the flyer’s edge traced a private circle that never climbed higher than her chin.
A cooler ribbon crossed her fingers, and a small shudder ran along her forearm before the warmth from the boards steadied it again.
The flyer quivered once, then waited, a held breath, while the parent dipped, fed, and lifted into a wide, easy arc across the yard.
When the wingbeats drifted outward, she shifted a half step left, and the light struck the old spill edgewise so each bead threw a short shadow.
The streak that first read like damage became a ladder of pressed pellets, their rims scalloped where small beaks once centered, turned, and tucked.
That raked brightness seemed to facilitate sorting layers by season; pale to one side, newer dark to another, with a faint thread of grass crossing.
A slim ribbon of grass lay pinned near the crown, its dulled green turned straw, a tiny kink where the stem once bent around wet clay.
She counted five thicker courses and then stopped, the total above that staying unknowable from the floor while the afternoon kept its own arithmetic.
Hattie hovered the flyer beside her cheek, then lowered it, palm opening on the warm grain as another pass of wings folded past the beam.
The kitchen’s low click came through the hall, and her heel settled deeper into the threshold while the yard held its bright stillness out beyond.
A neighbor’s eaves carried another chitter, spaced in even intervals between the two wide roofs.
She pressed the folded flyer flat against the doorframe, the creases aligning with the wood's long lines.
