English 原文
Ben pressed his boot near a shallow pool, and the surface lurched; a thin thread raced toward a pinhole beside a shell.
He shifted his heel the slightest bit, and the thread stalled, then resumed when his toes took the weight.
Viola crouched beside him, her head tilted so the skewed ellipse of sky on the water slid across their ankles.
Up on the dry ridge, their parent sat with a hat brim low, unmoving except for a page that lifted and settled.
Ben traced the pool’s edge with one finger held just above, and the thread wobbled like a pendulum that could not choose a path.
"See the thread?" he said, his voice low enough that ripples held their own small rhythm.
"I see two," Viola said, and she leaned forward until her knees pressed a rectangle of firmer sand.
Their bodies settled into a collaborative crouch, shoulders apart and hands braced, while sunlight trembled on the pool’s warm surface.
The thread slowed under glare, and silt clouded the pinhole; the water’s pulse stalled in shallow, stop-start breaths.
Ben reached toward a flat stone that outlined the pool’s rim, then stopped with his fingers hovering, his forearm held very still.
He drew his hand back and rocked on his heels, and the thread went thin, then disappeared altogether.
The far water made its rushing hush downshore, yet no new motion answered at their feet.
They stood and walked the firmer ridge toward the hat brim, their prints darkening and then brightening as dampness left their soles.
The parent angled a bottle toward Ben, and he took it and drank, then twisted the cap until a small glug pulsed the air.
He twisted again, slower, and felt the cap’s stop, release, stop, release; the rhythm traveled through his palm like a tiny crank.
A sandpiper skipped past in two quick bursts and a pause, its legs stuttering as if the flat itself carried a seam.
Back at the pool, their linked shadow transcended the rim and leaned across the surface, and the circle of sky beneath them tipped.
"Is that a hole, or a window?" Viola asked, and she pointed at a dark notch under the flat stone’s edge.
Ben pinched the stone’s nearest corner and lifted a breath’s width; the slab didn’t slide so much as pivot on a buried knob.
The tilt opened a thin cavity where a silver bubble waited, and it slipped free with a soft swell, and the thread resumed its race.
A second ring formed and broke, and the pool’s pace turned steady as their wrists hung quiet above it.
Ben lowered the corner until the stone settled exactly into its wet outline.
Ben
