Voices echoed across the municipal theater while painters dabbed fresh gold on cardboard crowns. Helena knelt beside a trunk of props, crossing items off a wrinkled list of last-minute preparations. A folded program lay on top; its cover promised “A Lasting Memory” in looping silver letters. She tugged at a velvet curtain to test its glide, yet the rail stuck halfway, metal teeth scraping. With a sharp exhale she pushed again; the cloth finally slid, revealing a dusty corridor behind the set.
A wooden door in that corridor resisted her first shove. She leaned her shoulder, hinges groaned, and the panel drifted inward. A single crate sat on the floor, lid askew. Inside, she spotted a weather-worn compass, the same one her brother Leo had carried during childhood treasure hunts. No one had mentioned him for years. Footsteps approached; a figure wearing a stagehand badge stepped beneath the overhead bulb. Leo’s grin spread, and his hand rose in an unsure wave. The poster beside them, taped crookedly to a column, declared: “Creating a Lasting Impression.”
Helena’s clipboard slipped; pencils rattled across the boards. She crouched, but Leo reached first, gathering them with quick, practiced movements. “Director said a swordsman quit,” he said, voice low. “They needed someone who already knew the moves.” He produced a foil from behind his back and offered it hilt-first. Stage chatter softened, as if cloth absorbed the noise, leaving only the soft clink of metal against wood. The siblings’ fingers brushed; the compass swung from his pocket, catching the light. That tiny reflection sparked a quiet, almost magical moment, a reunion born not in planned applause but in the accidental gap of a missing actor.
A bell rang three times, calling cast and crew to places. Leo adjusted his borrowed vest while Helena guided him toward the wings. The curtain once jammed slid freely now, the rail steadied by fresh grease. From the orchestra pit, a violin tested a hopeful arpeggio. Beyond the proscenium, the audience rustled their programs, unaware of the surprise waiting behind the drape. Backstage, the overturned crate rested beside the still spotlight.
