People stooped, chasing the tumbling rectangles; Mira dipped to snag one that slid beneath her shoe. For a moment she caught a glimpse of the postcard’s image—a mirrored tower bending skyward—but the reflection proved deceptive. The structure on the card curved like liquid, yet the actual tower beyond the trees stood rigid. She tucked the card onto the vendor’s table; her palm brushed spilled coins, and the vendor’s grateful nod cleared the narrow path beside the fruit crates.

Halfway across, rhythmic drumming from a dance troupe thickened the air. Mira swerved, only to feel the kite slip from her grasp. The string snagged on a brass rail, tightened, and tore a fragile corner. She paused, exhaled through pursed lips, then unfolded the kite against her thigh. A missing triangle gaped near the edge, yet its bright pattern of cranes and waves still formed a vivid metaphor for flight. She rolled the frame tighter, slid it into her backpack, and pressed forward. Drummers pivoted; a cymbal crashed; the crowd’s motion shifted, opening a slim corridor toward the library façade.

At the bottom step her brother leaned on the bannister, tapping a shoe against the marble. Without a word he offered a strip of clear tape from his pocket. She patched the torn edge while he angled the kite toward a rising breeze. The paper held, wings catching the draft. Together they let the line extend until the frame hovered above the plaza stalls. Coins clinked, drums softened, and bubbles from a nearby toy stand drifted upward.
