Marin After Closing-

English 원문
Evening hush settled along the marble corridors of the city museum as Marin walked into the hall of space relics. The last families drifted toward the exit, leaving only quiet footfalls and the steady sigh of ventilation above the glass cases. A faint guideline, painted in pale blue, crossed the polished floor; her boots followed it toward the newest arrival—a dark, ridged stone labeled “Probable Interstellar Visitor.” She carried a handheld scanner held at waist level to investigate rumors that the object contained traces of iridium. Behind her, Kiyo, a devoted xenophile who devoured every article about life beyond Earth, balanced a notebook and a small camera, the strap bouncing against his shoulder. A cleaner wheeled a silent cart past them, the wheels leaving thin reflections on the floor.
A loose cable near the pedestal snagged Kiyo’s ankle, flipping notebook and camera toward the floor. Pages fanned outward, slapping against the glass case before landing in a paper drift. The sudden stumble echoed across the hall, drawing a brief glance from a distant guard, yet the guard resumed his round. Marin knelt, gathering the sheets that had been meant to corroborate the museum’s bold claim. As she reached for the last page, her shoulder brushed the pedestal; a subtle tremor ran through the stand. The stone rocked once, then settled with a dull thud, releasing a puff of gray dust inside the enclosure. Both observers leaned closer. Fine powder slid away from a hairline crack that now circled the object like a chalk ring. Kiyo steadied his camera, the lens tracking every new fragment.
Marin touched the scanner to the glass; the readout dipped far below the published density. She tried again, yet the numbers refused to rise. The growing crack started to undermine the shell, tiny chips falling onto the velvet base. Marin wiped dust from the scanner display, her sleeve scattering tiny specks that drifted through the torch beam and settled like snow on the velvet base. She slipped the scanner into a pocket, pressed fingertips along the frame, and on the third push a narrow panel clicked free, allowing stale plaster scent to escape. With no crowd left to notice, both lifted the stone just enough for light to reach the fracture. Beneath the dark crust lay coarse white filler—evidence of a display cast rather than a celestial traveler. Their pages, collected to corroborate the claim, now recorded a quiet fraud. Soft light settled on the empty display case.
