Silvio climbed the final meters of the stony ridge while night still clung to the valley below. A camera swung against his chest, its lens capped, its tripod folded tight. He chose a flat patch beside a patch of alpine grass and planted the three legs, adjusting each one until the head sat level. Clouds drifted through the dark like slow rivers, promising only a brief window of ephemeral beauty once the sun arrived. He uncapped the lens, twisted the ring to a long focal length, and waited as the eastern horizon began to pale.

The first shot came out blurred. A sudden breeze vibrated the aluminium legs, sending a faint tremor through the frame. Silvio pressed both palms on the tripod collar, steadied it, then widened the aperture so the dim light could wash across the sensor. He exhaled, stepped back, and checked the screen; the image still leaned, the ridge line slanted as if sliding away. A loose stone under one foot had tilted the platform. He crouched, shifted the offending rock aside, and retightened every knob until metal groaned softly.

When the next quiet settled, a mountain jay swooped close, wings beating air against his ear. The startled hiker jerked sideways, knocking the focus ring. The bird landed on the tripod head itself, cocking its own head toward the glass as though admiring the daring composition. Its talons scratched the rubber grip, the camera rolled half a turn, and the frame now captured nothing but nearby grass. Silvio froze, hands hovering. After three heartbeats, the jay lifted away, leaving a single feather drifting down. He caught the feather, slipped it into his pocket, and realigned the lens toward the glowing rim of the world.

A slice of orange rose above distant peaks, spilling color into the thinning mist. Silvio pressed the shutter again; this time the screen displayed sharp ridges, drifting vapor, and the tiny gray feather balanced against the sky. He eased the tripod one final millimeter, let his shoulders drop, and listened to the shutter click three more times in steady rhythm. Light rested on the quiet ridge.
