A faint metallic grind drifted overhead. Felix looked up; thin steel cables ran across wooden poles above the greenery. Panels of hedge, mounted on hidden frames, slid sideways along the wires in measured bursts. The discovery rearranged his earlier assumptions: the labyrinth moved while people walked. He followed the sound until a low wooden gate rotated inward by mechanical timing, revealing a clearing. In its center stood a circular plinth; weather-worn bricks formed its foundation, and an antique wheel rested beside, linked to the cables. Behind the wheel a gardener wiped sweat with a sleeve and turned a second crank, sending another wall gliding until pathways shifted like oversized clock hands.

Felix waited, tracking the rhythm of the wheel—three turns, brief pause, another three. When the pause arrived again, he slipped through an opening before the hedge could slide back. The detour brought him to a raised terrace on the garden’s far side. From that height the entire design revealed itself: concentric rings of foliage arranged in chronological order, youngest saplings near the center, ancient yews forming the outermost guard. Wind died away, and distant chimes marked noon just as Felix sketched the final lines of his fountain. Shaped hedges stood motionless around the quiet terrace.
