English 원문
Gabriel reached the museum’s side courtyard just as the bell tower struck nine. A slender glass corridor linked the courtyard to the new tropical conservatory, and a security door divided corridor from street. He pressed the handle; metal clicked but the panel refused to budge. After a second push, the latch shifted, and he crossed the threshold. Inside the vestibule mild warmth brushed his face, and condensation blossomed across his lenses, hiding the shapes beyond the stained-glass panels. While his sleeve cleared each lens, a school group filtered past; their footsteps scattered brochures over the tiles. One leaflet skidded toward an air vent and vanished. A low gasp rolled through the queue, followed by a hush broken only by dripping coats. That small sound of collective fascination drew his gaze toward the inner gateway where green light pulsed behind frosted panes.
Gabriel stepped through the sliding doors and entered a suspended footbridge that arched above a man-made jungle. Vapor valves hissed; humid clouds drifted upward, beading along steel cables. Below the bridge, terraces held tiers of exotic flora: waxy crimson vines, speckled ferns, and enormous leaves that overlapped like roof tiles. A misplaced step jolted the railing; his notebook slipped, fluttered downward, and came to rest on a broad carnivorous plant. The leaf reacted, folding halfway, trapping paper against sticky ribs. He knelt, extended an umbrella through the mesh of the bridge, and nudged the notebook’s corner. The leaf tightened instead, and a thin splatter of dew spotted his sleeve. Overhead, sprinklers switched on, scattering droplets that drummed on glass and echoed along rafters. Visitors paused; cameras clicked; a ripple of movement across the walkway altered the air’s rhythm.
Moisture now soaked his cuffs, yet the notebook remained wedged. Gabriel exhaled, shifted balance, and reached again. This time the umbrella tip struck a support vine beside the stubborn leaf, not the leaf itself. The sudden vibration loosened adhesive sap; the notebook slid free, landed on a lower palm, and noiselessly balanced on its fronds. A gardener emerging from a service hatch lifted the palm fronds with a hooked pole, sending the notebook sailing toward the bridge. It struck the railing, teetered, then fell onto the deck at Gabriel’s boots. Water dripped from the pages, but the spine stayed intact. Sprinklers ceased, and warm mist thinned to a gentle veil. Dripping leaves hung motionless above the still walkway.
