Mira had launched her toy drone at lunchtime. A sudden gust had carried it beyond the park fence. The toy has been missing for hours, hidden by the tall plants. Since then she has walked through a strip of flat ground. That strip turns into open wilderness behind the houses. A distant train horn slides through the calm afternoon air. Grass reaches her knees and leans in every direction. Whenever wind waves sweep across the field, the moving green hides any metal glint. Light fades; moving clouds promise more rain, yet she keeps scanning the ground. She remembers that the drone’s propellers were bright red, so any sparkle will stand out.

A thin drizzle starts, tapping her sleeves. She breaks a long reed, using it to sweep wet blades aside. When her arm tires, she straightens and notices sunlight slipping under the clouds. Colors bloom in the sky; a faint rainbow bridges the roofs and the distant ridge. Its arc lands near a shallow puddle at the center of the meadow. Water in the puddle mirrors the stripes, and one stripe glitters against something shiny beneath the surface. She runs over; the drone lies half-submerged, its red shell flashing beneath the reflected green band. She lifts it carefully, water dripping, and the propellers turn once in the breeze before settling still.
