English 원문
Milo reached the wide shore just after dawn, a canvas sack bumping against his knee. The local science club planned a display built from reclaimed glass, and he set out to collect the most curious piece before crowds filled the sand. Foam hissed around driftwood while gulls circled above. Beside the pier, a line of plastic crates waited for cataloguing; each crate belonged to the regional beach registry, whose clerks would later log every object by color and weight. Milo rolled up his sleeves, crouched near a ridge of seaweed, and began turning over fragments, his breath misting in the pale morning air.
A sudden glint flashed beneath tangled kelp, then vanished as a retreating wave erased the mark. He lunged, fingers brushing slick stones, yet the grip slipped and cold water filled his boots. When the tide pulled back again, the glass reappeared: a slender cobalt bottle trapped between two rocks. Milo tightened his hold, but the neck jammed against a barnacled edge; the first tug failed. He shifted weight, wedged a flat shell under the rim, and pried until the articulation of bottle and rock loosened with a faint pop. Salty water splashed upward, sprinkling his jacket, and the prize settled in his palm at last.
He shook out sand and noticed several curled photographs inside, each no larger than a postage stamp. Their edges shimmered like fish scales, impossible to see clearly through smeared glass. He leaned closer; his steps quickened toward the white tent where volunteers sorted debris. A research assistant in rubber boots accepted the find, turning it under a lamp. Her analysis unfolded in swift motions: tweezers lifted the cork, a pipette drew remaining brine, and the photos slid onto black felt. The images showed different beaches, none familiar, each photograph dated on the very day’s sunrise. Milo blinked; the bottle had travelled, recording mornings as it drifted from coast to coast.
One crate rattled open to receive the discovery. The assistant noted that no similar item had surfaced in months, then laid the bottle beside drift-polished glass already sorted by shape. Camera shutters clicked as club members gathered, yet no one could trace the route printed beneath each tiny image. Milo stood back, sand drying on his boots, and listened as air passed through the empty neck, producing a thin whistle that rose above the hum of voices. Light faded outside; inside the tent, soft lamplight settled over the quiet crates.
