English 원문
The training vessel Windward floated beside a quiet pier where low tide left barnacles high and dry along the pilings. Green paint on the starboard rails flaked in thin curls, and brass bolts showed faint streaks of orange. A faded logbook still hung near the wheel, pages stiff after seasons of salt. Milo stepped onto the deck, boots tapping wood that had darkened line by line with each winter. He aimed to explore the forgotten science locker after noticing its lock already missing.
A narrow hatch covered the locker, wedged half-open. First, though, an old brass telescope waited on a tripod near the rail. Its lenses had once charted constellations for cadets; dust now filmed the eyepiece. Milo swung the tube shoreward, then toward open water, shoulders tightening when the pivot resisted. He loosened a wing nut, and the gear teeth finally meshed. Through the glass, ripples moved like quicksilver under afternoon sun, and gulls drifted above their own reflections.
While he was still searching the view, a zephyr crossed the deck and flipped the unused canvas that covered the main hatch. The loose fabric slapped the planks, pushed air below, and the smaller locker hatch below his feet rattled. The telescope jolted in his grip, frame slipping on its worn bearing, and the circle of vision dropped to the very deck. Inside that narrow ring, a sudden flash glimmered beneath the loosened hatch boards—bright, sharp, gone in less than a breath.
Milo crouched, fingers working under the lid. Swollen timber balked, so he pressed again with both palms; the hinge groaned and gave. A shallow compartment emerged, only big enough for a lunch pail. At its center rested a hand-mirror, silvering mottled but still throwing spears of light. The glimmer he had spotted through the telescope had come from this simple shard, not from some hidden instrument. Water stains edged the glass, showing how years had leaked through the deck above. Milo set the mirror upright against a coil of rope and let the hatch fall back.
The idle mirror lay inside the hatch, catching thin strips of afternoon light.
