Celia balanced a paper-wrapped parcel in one hand while weaving through the plaza beside Grand Terminal. The winter solstice evening pressed close, and overhead banners shifted each time a gust threaded the arcades. Her aim was simple: reach Platform Seven for a quick rendezvous with Rowan before his southbound train rolled away. Neon spilled across moving shoulders, mixing with plume of kettle-steam from a chestnut cart. A street performer turned sudden cartwheels; a passer-by, blinking like a startled xenophobe, recoiled into Celia’s path and jarred the parcel against the tiled floor.
The thin package skidded, scraped a bench leg, and stopped beneath a humming vending machine. Celia crouched, fingers brushing cold ceramic, yet the edge remained just out of reach. She angled her arm again; the parcel refused, held by the narrow gap. Footsteps crowded behind, and out of nowhere a trolley clipped her elbow, forcing her sideways. After an awkward breath she slid a folded ticket under the parcel, levered it free, and straightened. A smear of dust now dulled the wrapping, but the string still held.
Crowd currents shifted. Loudspeakers announced arrivals in three languages, their cadence merging into an ethereal chord that floated beneath the vault. Celia stepped toward the departure concourse; suddenly Rowan emerged atop the escalator, earlier than planned. He raised both hands in greeting, yet a ripple of commuters drifted between them. The parcel knocked against Celia’s coat again; she tightened her grip and changed direction toward a shortcut staircase. Halfway up, friction from the metal edge snagged her scarf, halting her. She unraveled the loose fringe, losing a second, then reached the mezzanine where Rowan waited beside a brass clock.
Their exchange lasted the span of a single chime. Rowan checked his watch, tucked the parcel beneath his arm, and vanished through the sliding doors toward his train. Celia pivoted toward the glass wall. Outside, holiday lights ringed the canopy; inside, travelers fanned toward various platforms, the flow already smoothing after the earlier compression. A draft soughed along the corridor, nudging discarded flyers across polished stones. Soft orange light rested on the empty benches.
