Late afternoon light rippled across the research pier as Milo arranged a plastic tub of cables. A yellow remote camera, shaped like a miniature submarine, bobbed in the salt water beside him. The recording schedule had been arranged by two senior students, yet no one else remained on the platform. Milo tracked one clear goal: capture the reef colony entering a delicate phase of growth before twilight. Seasonal currents often clouded the lagoon, so a quick launch mattered more than careful arrangement. He pressed the starter switch, and the propellers hummed, sending tiny rings across the surface.
The camera slipped under the pier, but drifting sand blurred the first minutes of footage, hiding coral shapes. Milo nudged the depth control; the craft rose, yet a gusty tide shoved it against a wooden post. His tether caught a cleat, so he leaned back, loosened the knot, and steadied the line again. A timely decision followed; he angled the lens upward, letting surface light slice through the murk. If he had checked the battery earlier, he would have avoided the sudden drop in signal strength. When the fresh cell clicked into place, the lagoon still fought, drifting another curtain of silt.
He eased the throttle once more; the craft glided lower and, at last, coral branches filled the monitor. Between the waving fronds, a silver glint appeared, spinning like a coin and stealing the camera’s focus. A faint prickle ran across his neck, a premonition brushing skin without changing his steady grip. The object resolved into a lost key ring shaped like a dolphin, caught on bright limestone. Sunlight, sharpened by a gap in the cloud layer, traced its loops while the camera circled slowly. Milo reeled the tether, water streaming from the hull as droplets pattered across the planks. Pixels from the final frame glowed on the tablet screen beside his damp gloves.
