Milo reached the department store just after lunch, jacket catalog clutched under his arm. Warm air drifted from the ground-floor café, carrying roasted almond aroma that brushed his cheeks while escalators hummed above. He had already compared prices online, yet he trusted real fabric beneath his fingers. A blazer with a characteristic zigzag stitch waited on the second floor, so he joined the waiting area in line outside a single fitting room. The rope barrier wobbled each time the door clicked, and surface music tangled with the chatter of shoppers adjusting buttons and sleeves.

The line crawled. A clerk rolled extra mirrors closer, shrinking the narrow waiting area until coat hangers touched Milo’s knees. If he had noticed the tightening space earlier, he would have stepped sideways, but now his shoulders pressed the velvet rope. At last the latch turned; he hurried inside, only to find the blazer’s sleeve puckered where a tag had been stitched and removed. He tried smoothing the cloth, yet the crease clung like wet paper. A second jacket hung nearby, yet its pocket had been stained by careless perfume. The minutes already spent were stacked like coins, and the door handle tapped impatiently from outside.

Milo straightened, left both blazers on their hooks, and stepped back into fluorescent light. New arrivals had been wheeled out while he waited, including a wool scarf displaying the same zigzag pattern, only brighter. He compared its threads against the catalog image he had memorized; the colors matched without that stubborn crease. Payment counters stood half empty now, so his path opened easily. The cashier folded the scarf twice, slid it into a thin box, and pushed the lid closed. Soft light rested on the folded scarf beside the register.

隊伍緩慢前移。店員推來額外鏡子，使狹窄的等待區更擁擠，衣架碰到米洛的膝蓋。如果他早些注意到空間收縮，便會側身，但此刻肩膀已抵住天鵝絨圍繩。終於輪到他，他匆匆進門，卻發現外套袖口起皺——吊牌拆除後留下的痕跡。他試著撫平布料，卻像濕紙般貼着不散。旁邊另一件外套口袋被香水弄出污漬。剛才花去的時間像硬幣疊起，門把又傳來輕敲聲。

米洛深吸一口氣，把兩件外套掛回原處，走回螢光燈下。等待期間，店員推出新品，其中一條羊毛圍巾繡著相同鋸齒圖案，色彩更亮。他把線紋與腦中型錄對照，色調一致且沒有那討厭的折痕。結帳櫃台此時半空，他的動線頓時暢通。收銀員把圍巾對折，再對折，放入薄盒，蓋子輕合。柔和的燈光停在收銀台旁那條折好的圍巾上。
