Today, however, the first escalator is being repaired, so a red rope blocks the entrance. A steady stream of shoppers crowds the nearby stairs, and space shrinks around Leo’s elbows. The pot wobbles; loose soil sprinkles onto his shoes. He breathes once, steps toward the stairs, and stops. Wind rushes down from the open skylight above, rocking the plant’s yellow heads. Two forces—tight crowd below and restless air above—now pull against his simple plan.

A builder who stands beside a stack of tiles notices the falling soil. Without speaking, he wheels a narrow push cart forward, leaving its flat surface clear. Leo gently rests the pot on the cart. He walks beside it while the cart rolls toward a freight lift hidden behind sliding doors. The surprise lift rises smoothly, avoiding the packed stairs and the noisy wind. At the roof, the doors open onto sunlight that strokes wide benches. Leo thanks the silent helper with a nod, then carries the pot across the tiles. He sets it carefully among herbs that sparkle with recent rain. Soil settles, petals steady, and the cart’s wheels fade as the lift descends again.
