Leo crosses the narrow rooftop bridge behind the library, aiming to peek into a round water tank he has never touched. The brief journey forces him to lean forward, because gusts race between chimneys. Warm air from a vent mixes with a faint rubber smell, then vanishes in the stronger wind. Metal plates under his shoes hold flecks of rain and feel slick. Two thin antennas stand tall beside the tank, tapping whenever the breeze shifts. From this height, parked cars look like colored buttons, and the garden below shows small wonders of pattern. He kneels, then rises again; the new perspective allows exploration of a thin seam circling the tank lid that ordinary passers-by never notice.

The lid, however, refuses to move. Rust has fused metal to metal, and Leo’s fingers slip. He has tried simple force before; now he scans the roof. A broken broom handle lies near a vent. He wedges the handle under the seam, using it as a lever. Pressure spreads; the board creaks, and the cover finally tilts enough for air to hiss through. At that instant, cold water drips from an unseen pipe and splashes his sleeve, startling him. The turning motion also frees a knotted ribbon that flutters out like a forgotten kite tail. Leo steps back, places the handle flat on the asphalt, and watches the ribbon twist in the wind above the silent tank.
