Lara walked to the small pond behind her school, a glass jar swinging from her wrist. A science fair was coming to the gym soon. She wanted to show that the pond still sheltered at least one smooth newt. Twilight already painted the water purple, and the path had grown uneven. Reeds had absorbed a week of rain and now hung over the bank. They formed a dense wall that scratched her boots. A breeze shook the surface, and ripples kept hiding any moving shape. She had planned the entire trip very carefully. The fading light pressed from one side while the heavy vegetation pressed from the other. She had never sensed such dense emotions in the air around a simple after-class walk.

Lara knelt, expecting a long wait, but a sudden splash lifted droplets onto her sleeve. A tiny newt popped through the ripples and slid across a flat stone. It landed straight inside the open jar that had rested beside her knee. The splash shook her hand, and she almost dropped the lid. Then she noticed that the breeze had tilted the jar’s mouth toward the water at the jump. The search that might have dragged on has been resolved in one breath. She chose to carry on with the next task, getting home before the sky darkened fully. She placed a leaf over the jar, tightened the string, and the quiet pond reflected her small victory.
