Morning light fell across the school courtyard, and the bricks stayed warm and sunny. Lina placed her charcoal sketch on a low stone that had faded under last summer heat so the paper could dry. Groundskeepers had arranged rows of chairs for an afternoon ceremony, and the automatic sprinkler waited under the seats. A slow leak already spilled water toward the stone, marking a moving line across the dust. She needed the drawing before the leak reached it. A waist-high hedge blocked the straight route.

The water touched the first chair leg, then spread wider, glimmering around a drifting dragonfly. Lina saw two options. The long gravel path circled the hedge, safe but slow. A narrow row of edge stones cut through the flowerbed; the stones looked slick yet quick. She jumped onto the first stone. Wet moss shifted under her sole, and one shoe slipped into the shallow stream. She wobbled, caught balance, and snatched the sketch just as water soaked the stone. A small iguana, green and still, blinked behind the paper, revealed by her sudden reach. Lina breathed out a short laugh, while the soaked shoe squished back along the stones. Wider jets of water soon covered the path she had used. A steady mist climbed over the chairs and swallowed the hedge.
