Starlings Above the Old Bridge-

English 원문
Elias stood on the old railway footbridge before sunrise, fingers tapping the metal rail in quick rhythm. He had prepared for weeks to capture a clear recording of skylarks greeting the day; the entry form listed evidence of an entire octave in wild song. The microphone had been placed inside a foam cage, and fresh batteries clicked into the recorder. Finite morning light hovered beyond the warehouses, and a faint breeze spun grit across his boots. When the first lark began to soar above the distant fields, a loose screw rattled beneath the plank, colouring the sound with dull knocks. Elias shifted his weight, shoulders stiff, as the precious moment thinned.
Just as the lark climbed higher, an unprecedented whistle from a freight train spilled under the bridge and drowned the delicate trills. Elias pressed stop. He tried again when the rails fell quiet, yet the wind rose and fluttered the foam, turning every chirp into rough static. He swapped the cage for a heavier wool sleeve, tightened the screws, and crouched lower behind a steel beam. If the wind had stayed gentle, the second take would have worked, yet another problem emerged: city bells rang at eight, their metal clangs stretching beyond anything a filter could erase. Shoulders sank, but his hands kept moving, readjusting cables, rewinding tape, counting the finite recording space left.
Evening cooled the bridge, and dew began to crystalize on the rail. Elias had almost packed up when a flock of starlings gathered above the warehouses. They curved through the violet sky like iron filings circling around a hidden magnet, wings slicing air in waves. Their calls layered over one another, rising, falling, touching every octave his project required. No engine, bell, or wind interfered; the city paused as though holding breath. He pressed record again, steady this time, while the birds soared in shifting shapes. When the flock finally poured away toward the river, the tape clicked to its end. The recorder rested beside a thin layer of frost that glimmered under the streetlamp.
