English 원문
Diego crossed the cobbles toward the townhall just as the clock struck nine. Metal rails framed a temporary stage, and a compact steam engine gleamed at its center. Mara, a local developer who spent her weekends restoring antique machines, tightened the final bolt with quiet concentration. Nearby, a cherry-red mustang idled, its polished hood reflecting shifting clouds. Diego lifted his camera, hoping the first hiss of steam would meet his lens before the crowd thickened.
A low whistle escaped the boiler; a piston slid forward, then back, drawing rhythmic puffs of vapor that drifted toward the café umbrellas. Phones rose like migrating birds. Diego adjusted focus, yet his lens cap refused to budge on the threaded ring. He twisted again; the cap slipped and clattered onto the stage floor. The sudden noise startled a group of children, and their shuffle nudged a safety rope. Mara glanced over her shoulder, eyebrows lifting; her quick smile turned the mishap into an oddly insightful moment—equipment, whether optical or mechanical, often resisted perfect timing.
Steam built. The piston gained speed, but a new sound joined the pattern, a sharp metallic tap that didn’t match the smooth slide. Diego bent lower and noticed a faint wobble near the crank. He tapped Mara’s sleeve and pointed. She cut the throttle lever; vapor curled away, and the engine slowed until the tap became a stubborn clunk. The surrounding murmur ebbed. Diego knelt, pressed fingertips against the housing, and felt a tiny screw working itself loose. Without ceremony, Mara fetched a spanner. The tool slipped once, scraping paint, yet her second tug seated the screw. A collective exhale rippled through the spectators as the piston steadied.
Mara reopened the valve. The engine resumed its steady cadence; the mustang’s driver answered with a brief, playful rev, blending modern roar with antique chuff. Diego finally captured his shot: white vapor rising, sunlight flashing on brass, people leaning in with widened eyes. Behind them, the townhall clock hands reached toward ten, and bells softened the lingering echo.
Sunlight pooled across the now still piston beside the wheel.
