English 원문
Milo balanced a narrow wooden box against his ribs while weaving through the arcade toward the city clock tower. The box held a single, nickel-shining spark plug requested by the tower’s resident watchmaker, Corbin. According to the courier slip, the part would complete a miniature steam engine scheduled for an afternoon unveiling. Bells overhead struck once as Milo reached the iron door; their echo lingered like thick paint. He aimed to be quick; the ceremony began in less than an hour. On the wall beside the entrance, a faded blueprint of the tower gears rested beneath dusty glass, each line forming rivers of precise graphite.
A metal lever beside the door resisted the first pull, so Milo pressed harder; rust shifted, and the panel opened with a hiss of trapped air. Warm breath from the furnace greeted him; pages from an open blueprint lifted, floated, and scattered across the workshop floor. He crouched, gathering curling sheets before sparks could reach them. Nearby, a crucible tamed a glowing line of ore whose surface gleamed like sunrise trapped in stone. The watchmaker, bent under an immense flywheel, tightened screws without noticing the small storm behind him. Gears higher up inside the tower clicked, their rhythm matching the quick pace of Milo’s hands as he secured each rescued page.
Corbin finally straightened, wiping bronze dust from his sleeves. "The engine waits for its last piece," he said, voice carrying restless energy rather than command. Milo lifted the lid of the box. Light bounced off the spark plug, sharp as a fallen star. Corbin fitted it beneath the boiler; steam whispered along new pipes, and the flywheel rotated. To Milo’s surprise, the movement spread beyond the bench: strings of miniature streetlamps inside a glass-walled model city flickered alive, windows brightening one after another until every alley glowed. Children outside the workshop window pressed their noses to the glass when the tower’s main clock responded, setting its hands in flawless sync with the tiny replica below. An entire mechanism, hidden moments earlier, now breathed in unified rhythm. Inside the glass case, brass wheels rotated beneath steady midday light.
