Late afternoon light stretched across the city’s botanical garden, and Mila unfolded her sketchbook beside the gate. She had read earlier that a single striped tulip bloomed briefly near the pond each spring. Capturing that rare curve became her afternoon goal, a challenge sweeter than any gallery assignment. Soft wind rustled bamboo, and distant footsteps echoed along the stone pathway linking the main beds. She settled on a wooden bench, pencils ready, when a sudden drizzle dotted the open page. Water spots blurred graphite lines, forcing her first retreat beneath the broad roof of the tea kiosk. The tulip, now closed against the shower, waited untouched on its slender stalk across the lawn.
When clouds thinned, she returned, yet fresh trouble arrived; weekend visitors pooled around the flower like colorful umbrellas. Every time her hand rose, another backpack swung into view, breaking the outline she tried to trace. She had been certain patience alone would clear the view, but chatter and selfies filled the narrow path. If she had arrived at dawn, the sketch would have progressed without this moving curtain of jackets. Instead, she stepped onto damp grass, knelt low, and balanced the pad against one raised knee. From that angle the petals emerged between shoulders for seconds, enough for quick strokes before bodies shifted again. Wind soon flipped a finished corner, creasing it sharply, so she clipped the page beneath a spare pencil.
At last the crowd drifted toward the café, and sunlight poured through broken cloud like liquid brass. As warmth returned, the shy tulip unfolded fully, revealing a second inner ring of midnight violet stripes. Mila’s eyebrows lifted; her graphite tip hovered, then danced to capture the surprise hidden moments earlier. The bench had been splashed during the shower, so she remained crouched, even when her ankle tingled. Graphite smudged her wrist, yet lines on paper formed the delicate arc she had chased all afternoon. Thin ripples rolled across the pond, and serenity hovered in the mild air around her bent elbow. Evening light rested on her finished sketch beside the quiet pond now.
