Atlas, standing by the rim, let a coin plink into the pool; the metallic ring threaded itself through the brighter trickle above and faded under the rolling murmur below. Dawn traced the layered sound with quick, smooth arcs, trying to sketch the woven network of spray lines arcing from bowl to bowl. Pipes buried beneath the plaza’s infrastructure added a muted throb, hinting at the pump’s fuller rhythm. Mist brushed her cheeks, then drifted aside when a mild updraft climbed from the slab in front of her knees. Glare bounced from the water, blurring the cove-shaped shadow cut into the middle basin.

A rapid clatter broke her focus; Atlas’s pocket pouch split, and dozens of coins rattled across the paving toward the path entrance. Pigeons leapt away, wings drumming air, and Atlas’s barked laugh echoed against the shaded wall. Dawn left the bench to help, shoes scraping over hot stone; their knees knocked while they trapped rolling discs before they reached passing feet. Behind them, the plaza kept its own tempo: the clock tower chimed, voices mingled, and the fountain entered another full-flow surge. By the time the last coin spun to a stop, the sun had shifted, heating the bench top until faint ripples of warm air drifted upward, steering cool mist toward the abandoned sketchbook. Droplets gathered, and the paper fibres acted like a woven network of tiny channels, spreading moisture outward in branching streaks.

Dawn returned, and the change was immediate: the page that had carried precise graphite lines had blossomed into pale, water-softened shapes. She tapped the corner; water hissed as it slid toward the slab’s edge, then she tilted the book, letting excess drip into the lower cove of the fountain rim. Adapting, she darkened the blurred areas, blending them with short strokes until the wash suggested depth beneath the middle basin. To halt further bleeding, she raised the sketchbook, pressing it against her shirt until warmth from her ribs steadied the damp sheet. The bench that had been only lukewarm minutes earlier had warmed under the moving sun. Thin curls of steam drifted upward from the sun-soaked slab beside the sketchbook.
