Milo wiped the surface completely clean, yet breath instantly frosted it again. He wished he had packed thicker gloves, but fingers kept working, quick and rough. If the strap had broken, the camera would have vanished into the gorge beneath the ridge.

On his third attempt a crack ripped through clouds, revealing columns of sunlight that pierced drifting snow like spotlights. At last the rare natural phenomenon settled across the sky, steady enough for a perfect frame. A flock of ravens erupted from the pine, slicing across the beam exactly as the shutter clicked. The unexpected dark silhouettes quickly carved dramatic lines through the bright light column. Milo lowered the camera, unaware of the final image, and packed his gear while snowfall thickened around boot prints. Heavy snow gradually muted every sound around the ridge until only wind whispered against rough bark. By the time he shouldered the pack, a layer of fresh snow rested over the camera bag.
