Marco pushed open the narrow iron gate and stepped onto the rooftop terrace behind the community museum. The sun sat low, painting long stripes across cracked tiles. Yesterday’s groundbreaking repairs on the lower floor had shaken loose bits of mortar, and a chunk now lay beside a potted olive tree. Marco’s afternoon goal stood clear: slide the heavy planter five hand-spans inward so the edge could be retiled before rain arrived. Friends from the restoration crew called him a believer in ordinary fixes, and he agreed by showing up whenever a loose hinge or wobbling board begged for attention.

He wrapped both arms around the ceramic rim. The first pull ended with a hollow scrape and no movement; the mass refused to shift. Wind skimmed over the parapet and scattered dry leaves against his boots. He widened his stance, adjusted grip, and tried again. Muscles along his back tightened in a herculean effort, and this time the planter edged forward a finger’s width. Dust clouded upward, drifting toward a row of gutter pipes where rust glimmered. The smell of sun-warmed soil drifted into his lungs, mingling with a faint tang of wet concrete still curing downstairs. He blinked dust from his eyelashes. A second push, harder and longer, jolted the trunk of the olive tree, shaking a cluster of pale olives onto the tiles.

A sharp rustle followed the fallen fruit. From the shaded hollow behind a stack of abandoned floorboards, an owl burst into view, wings flaring inches from Marco’s forehead. He staggered, knocking his shoulder against the planter. The bird wheeled once above the terrace, talons splayed, then swept beyond the roof’s rim and vanished into bright sky. Startled, Marco watched a single feather spiral down until it touched the tile and lay still. Leaf litter settled again; silence returned except for distant traffic echoing through alleyways.

The jolt had shifted the planter just enough to free the cracked tile beneath. Marco bent, pried the loosened square free, and laid it sideways against the wall. A line of darker clay marked where moisture had crept year after year, a quiet calendar etched in stone. He slid a fresh tile from his pack and tapped it into the exposed gap. Clouds thickened overhead, releasing their first sober drops as he stood and rolled his shoulders. Water pooled around the new tile while the small feather rested beside the planter.

果實落地後傳來尖銳沙沙聲。堆放木板的陰影中，一隻貓頭鷹衝出，雙翼在馬可額前張開。他身子一晃，肩膀撞上花盆。鳥兒在露台上空盤旋一下，爪張開，隨即掠過屋緣消失在明亮天空。馬可愕然注視一根羽毛旋轉下降，落在磚上不再移動。落葉重新歸於平靜，除了遠方巷弄裡的車聲，四周靜默。

那一下震動剛好讓花盆騰出碎裂的磚。馬可彎腰撬起鬆動的方塊，側放在牆邊。一道較深的泥土痕跡顯示多年來水氣慢慢滲入，像靜默的年曆刻在石上。他從背包取出新磚，輕敲嵌入缺口。烏雲在頭頂變厚，滴下第一陣沉穩的雨，他站直身子，滾動肩膀。雨水在新磚周圍積起，而那根小羽毛靜靜靠在花盆旁。
