The rope had been threaded through a tiny metal loop earlier, yet the final stretch remained out of reach. During his third climb the unexpected happened: a lively gust slid under the lantern’s paper shell, causing it to soar from his fingertips. Instead of falling, it drifted upward, candle still unlit, until its frame hooked naturally over the very beam he had been reaching for. The rope straightened, and the lantern hung securely, its delicate surface glowing faintly where late sunlight pressed through. Milo blinked, then laughed once, a brief sound swallowed by the wind that seemed to transcend stone walls. Gold light pooled over the porch, holding a quiet hint of divinity. Soft light rested on the silent beam.
