The stool wobbled across the uneven stone; Jonah hopped down while the cat scampered behind an empty flowerpot. Trying again, he balanced a broom handle beneath the cord, hoping the extra reach might lift it onto the hook. Smooth varnish offered no grip, and the lanterns slid once more, clattering against the table and startling the hidden cat. Before Jonah gathered the fallen lanterns, the cat sprang onto the ribbon roll. The roll spun like a wheel across the courtyard, tugging the loose cord behind it.
