Before stiff shoulders froze her stance, a metallic flutter shot overhead. A goldfinch arrowed past, scarlet face flashing, close enough to ruffle her hair. Its sudden streak startled a cloud of lapwings resting farther out; they erupted together, white bellies flashing like tossed coins. Maris raised the useless camera by reflex, then lowered it and laughed without a sound, palms open in the morning air. She slipped the silent camera back into its pouch, but kept the tripod planted. Instead of photographs, she watched ripples pulse through water where wings had skimmed moments earlier. Reeds leaned, straightened, and stilled; loose flakes of varnish spiraled down and settled beside the salamander’s narrow trail. Sunlight thickened, filling low spaces between boards, and the ridge resumed its quiet rhythm as though nothing had paused it at all. Soft light rested on the empty boardwalk.
