Liam carried a small net beside the wide lake. He wanted a bright marble floating near a tiny island. Soft morning light touched the quiet water. Reeds framed the wetland and moved with steady ripples. A dark tadpole darted under his boot print. Liam smiled and planned to swim across the narrow gap.

He stepped onto a flat rock at the shore edge. The rock tilted, splashing water over his ankle. The splash pushed the marble farther from the island. A startled frog kicked mud that clouded the lake. Liam paused and noticed a fallen branch beside the reeds. He lifted the branch and stretched it toward the drifting marble. The branch bumped the marble back toward the shore. Waves settled as the marble touched sand near Liam. He dropped the branch and leaned down quickly. Cold fingers closed around the smooth glass. Liam wiped the marble and placed it in his pocket. Water dripped from his sleeve onto the small stones. Sunlight glinted on the wet marble while Liam walked home.
