English 원문
Louis pushed open the side door of the library. Morning rain still tapped against the gutter, and cool air followed him inside. The main staircase had been closed for repairs, so he aimed for the narrow balcony that circled the reading hall. He had hoped to compare two atlases beneath the tall window there. Paint peeled from the banister, and the brass knob felt loose under his palm. Halfway up, he paused. Thin light fell across silent rows; dust floated, hung, then settled again. Far below, a clock ticked, its steady pulse staying in the background like a quiet companion.
At the balcony landing, fresh trouble waited. A cabinet for returned books blocked the final turn, placed there for convenience during construction. Louis tried to shift it; the wheels squeaked yet refused to roll over a warped board. If he had brought another person, moving the weight would have been simple. He leaned on the rail and examined the clutter. Behind stacked boxes, a festival prop rested: a huge paper-maché white elephant, once bright, now faded to chalky grey. Its hollow body sat on a wooden sled. Louis gripped the sled’s rope, tugged, and the elephant slid forward with surprising ease.
The movement freed just enough space for him to squeeze past the cabinet, yet something inside the elephant rattled. The faint metallic knock diverted him from the atlases. Louis reached through a tear in the painted flank; his fingers touched cold metal, then drew out a small tin key wrapped in brittle ribbon. The key had been engraved with a date long past, and fine dust lined each groove. If he had ignored the sound, the discovery would have waited many more years. He slipped the key into his pocket and stepped onward. Light rested on the quiet desk by the glass.
