Lucas had always locked his sketchbook inside his locker, yet tonight it was gone. Fluorescent ceiling panels buzzed above the empty corridor, scattering temporary pools of light across the tiles. His shoulders lifted and fell in a quick rhythm while he reviewed every earlier movement, trying to trace back the moment the book might have slipped away. If he had checked his bag before leaving the art room, he would have spared himself this lonely search. A faint whistle from the ventilation shaft drifted around him like a harbinger of further trouble, but his boots kept sliding forward.
The first classroom he entered offered no clue; the lights had been left on, turning each desk into a small stage. He crouched, lifted backpacks, and examined chair racks, only to stand again with stiff knees. A janitor’s cart blocked the next door, and its loose wheel squeaked when he nudged it aside—a second obstacle, a second delay. Lucas tried the library next. Shelves formed a maze, and his fingers skimmed dusty spines, yet no charcoal-smudged cover waited there. The search felt like an enigma growing thicker with every silent minute.
He stepped back into the corridor and noticed the music room door slightly ajar. Inside, moonlight spilled onto polished wood, reflecting against a grand piano. The sketchbook lay on the piano bench, but a surprise rippled through his fingers: someone had added a vivid drawing of the same corridor, only the lights in the picture were dark. He flipped more pages; the new lines stopped there, as if an unseen hand had paused mid-story. Lucas paused, then tucked the book under his arm. The school remained quiet, and no shadow moved behind him. The sketchbook rested under the soft lamp on his desk.
