Between the drawings lay a single page filled with neat lines of reminiscence—descriptions of picnics, rain showers, and laughter echoing off damp stone—but time had blurred most words beyond recognition. Mara laid her palm on the page; Lewis brushed stray wax droplets away, his motion almost affectionate, as though the fragile paper were a small bird in his care. They arranged the sketches across the table, turning them so the flame could reach every corner.
