Morning light stretched across the town baseball diamond.

Fresh dew cooled Milo's shoes at the edge. Crickets clicked beneath the stands, and the smell of freshly cut grass drifted beyond the chain fence. As he reached center field, he carried a white bucket of chalk. He planned a neat circle for the weekend match, hoping the grass might appear somewhat lively. The dusty benches, which had cracked along one edge, showed rings where rainwater had dried. Those pale circles hinted at seasons of laughter and friendship under faded banners. The field has seen countless picnics before here. A faint hum from traffic mixed with brush taps on the bucket. He bent down, but a stiff breeze scattered the first line. At that moment, youth practicing long throws drifted sideways, kicking dust onto his still-wet chalk. He noticed them calling signals during drills; they support each other, keeping the session lively.

Wind plus flying dirt formed the first obstacle; the wandering players became the second. Milo steadied the bucket behind his body, then switched tactics. He soaked a rag inside, squeezing drops until the chalk formed a thicker paste that refused to lift. When the players stepped closer, he waved, pointed toward the opposite half, and knelt again. As he pressed the new paste, his trowel struck a thin metal box buried just beneath the grass. The lid popped open, revealing a small photograph of two teenagers holding gloves, backs touching, smiles wide. Mud covered the corners, yet their closeness stood clear. Milo paused, brushing soil away while the breeze settled. The pasted circle stayed bright, gleaming quietly around the unexpected treasure.
