He tried to tread lightly on the gravel, yet every shift of his boots sent small stones clacking down the slope toward a pale ribbon of river below.

A wooden span waited at the bottom, once part of a narrow-gauge line. When Felix placed a foot on the first plank, it dipped, groaned, and threw a drop of water against his ankle. He stepped back, weight redistributing, then pressed again near the bolt where the timber felt firmer. Boards flexed but held. Midway across he paused: green algae painted the posts, and a missing rail allowed a view upstream where the current curled around rocks and carried twigs in slow spirals. The river appeared lower than usual; pale silt shaped crescent patterns on newly exposed ground.

Beyond the bridge the path opened into a tranquil cove carved between limestone walls. Echoes slipped along the stone, soft enough that wingbeats from a distant heron filled the air. A shallow pool occupied the center, reflecting layered strata like a tilted mirror. Felix knelt, set the sketchbook on a dry ledge, and brushed loose sand aside, seeking flat stones to trace. His fingers instead struck something smoother than the surrounding grit. He swept more grains away, and a line of colored tiles surfaced—red, then blue, then a chipped square of gold glass.

He widened the cleared circle with careful strokes. The receding waterline uncovered a mosaic larger than a dining table, its scene half lost beneath lingering mud: a sunburst, a boat, and what might be a cluster of grapes, the pattern vivid despite the silt. Each tile caught daylight; ripples bounced brightness across the quarry walls and onto Felix’s open pages. The sketchbook rested beside the newly revealed design, and water pooled around the uncovered mosaic and glimmered under the muted sky.
