A narrow path threaded between trunks, and both hikers entered at nearly the same breath. The ground dipped, rose, and pinched their foot-space so closely that their elbows nearly brushed. Roots rose from the soil like thin hurdles, and Leo stumbled when a snag pulled at his bootlace. Mira steadied him by tapping his shoulder, then moved past a mossy stump to navigate around a puddle. At the end of that bend, reflected light hinted at a watercourse; beyond it, grass brightened into a wide clearing ringed by taller oaks. Midway across the open ground, a dark form cropped the grass—massive head, horned silhouette unmistakable. Both sets of shoulders froze. Windless air carried every rustle, so each breath escaped through parted lips in tiny, careful threads.

Leo eased his backpack to the ground, glass buckle clicking against stone. Mira crouched lower, balancing her camera on a knee. Their quiet arrangement took time, yet a twig cracked under Leo’s heel without warning. The buffalo lifted its head, tail flicking. No stampede followed; instead, the animal rotated slowly, eyeing the forest edge before returning to the grass. Relief loosened Leo’s shoulders. A moment later, an electric whine crept overhead. The sound snapped through branches, and the buffalo lurched sideways, hooves throwing up clumps of earth. Camera shutters clicked too late; the animal trotted toward thicker shadow and vanished between trunks. Breeze created by the departing bulk shivered fern fronds near Leo’s boots, then settled. The drone tilted, lost altitude briefly, and continued west until its hum faded. Leo and Mira stood, dusted bark from their sleeves, and exchanged a silent nod before retracing the shaded trail. Late light rested on the empty glade.
