The moor stretched under a pale sky, a vast expanse of russet grass and scattered puddles where last night’s rain lingered. Eliot, a quiet tinkerer with sleeves rolled high, balanced a hand-sized wooden vessel against his hip and scanned the ground for a level pool. Brass pins winked along the hull, and a tiny wheel at the stern clicked while he walked. A faded lampoon of a bearded sea captain curved across one side, the paint chipped but still grinning. A shallow basin near a leaning fence offered water clear enough for a trial, so Eliot crouched, set the boat down, and drew back his fingers.

Ripples spread as the vessel met the surface. The craft floated, but the prow dipped unevenly; a hidden twig pressed against the underside. Eliot nudged the twig with a stick, yet the obstruction shifted only a fingertip’s distance before lodging again. He pursed his lips, rocked onto his heels, and pressed harder. The twig snapped at last, and the boat lifted to a balanced line, buoyant and almost weightless. A breeze rolled across the grass, carrying the smell of wet earth. The small wheel spun once, then again, gathering speed from the moving air.

A stronger gust swept over the water without warning and flipped the little craft on its side. Droplets sprang upward, striking Eliot’s spectacles. He blinked, wiped the glass with his sleeve, and reached, but his boots slipped on moss at the pool’s rim. While he steadied himself, the wind corrected course and righted the vessel, driving it toward a clump of reeds. Blades scratched the hull; the grin on the painted captain scraped against green stalks, leaving flecks of color behind. Eliot lunged, fingers spread, missed by half a hand’s width, and watched the boat vanish into the reed bed.

Silence followed except for the soft rustle of grass bending under continued wind. Eliot paced the margin, hands opening and closing, then spotted a gleam where reeds parted. The craft drifted back, slowed by tangled stems until water tension halted every ripple. Eliot kneeled, extended a long twig, and eased the vessel free. He set it on soaked turf, turned it gently, and examined the scratched paint without a word. The small vessel rested beside the reed cluster, wood darkened and still.

突來的強陣風掀翻了小船，水珠濺起擊在他眼鏡上。他眨眼、用袖口擦拭，並伸手去抓，卻在池邊長滿苔蘚的地面打滑。當他穩住身形，風向又變，將船扶正並推向蘆葦叢。葉片刮擦船身，畫著笑臉的船長在綠色莖葉間留下彩色碎屑。他撲過去，差了半個掌距，眼看船隱入葦間。

除了持續吹動草叢的風聲，一切靜了下來。伊利奧特在邊緣來回，雙手不斷張合，忽見蘆葉分隙處閃光。小船被纏住後又慢慢漂回，直到水的張力讓漣漪停息。他跪下，用長枝輕輔，把船撥回濕草地，翻看刮痕，默然無語。小船停靠在蘆叢旁，暗色木身仍舊靜止。
