English 원문
Eli stood a step behind the railing, watching Vivian's float bob beyond the last piling, a tiny dot flickering red against the morning glare. Between surges of light, the water reflected the sky in broken sheets, and the float rested among them like punctuation that refused to settle. A scarab-shaped beetle crept across the sun-warmed plank near Eli's sandals, its shell mirroring the float’s lacquered shine. The beetle paused whenever the plank shuddered under someone’s shifting weight, then resumed its slow patrol, antennae brushing the grain. Each pause echoed the float’s own hesitation, and Eli counted them without meaning to.
Light slid along the rods, staining cork handles amber. In the interim between tiny wind gusts, the pier settled into silence so complete that barnacles clicking beneath the boards sounded like a distant typewriter. Sunlight flashed off a cormorant’s wet wings, then folded away when the bird slipped under again. A remnant of seaweed clung to Vivian’s line, drifting just under the surface and tugging every few breaths, yet the float held its height stubbornly. Vivian shifted sideways, raised an eyebrow toward the water, and said, “This patch feels quieter.” Eli nodded, but his attention stayed on the float, measuring the contrast between its stillness and the soft roll crossing the pilings.
Minutes stacked like the flat stones children sometimes leave on the railing, and each minute carried a smaller ripple than the last. The glare appeared to polarize into two distinct bands, silver above and green below, so Eli could read even half-millimetre twitches in the float’s shadow. He started to reach for the reel, stopped, and let his hand hover. No bell would warn him today, so his own fingers had to rise to the occasion. At the exact moment his shadow overlapped the beetle’s track, the float tipped forward, slipped beneath the surface, and the rod transmitted a quick, living vibration.
Eli lifted, the rod bending just enough to draw a slim curve against the bright air, and a drip slid along the fiberglass and fell. The unseen weight below answered with two sharp pulses, neither strong nor weak, simply definite. Vivian leaned back, palms flat on the railing, leaving space without remark; the pier beneath them gave a single creak as though adjusting. Eli began to reel in short turns, water spiraling off the taut line. The float surfaced behind the pull and skittered toward him, skimming across mirrored bands that kept widening.
