Mila pushed the workshop door inward; tired hinges grumbled, and a strip of sunlight crossed forgotten shelves. A dog named Bruno watched from the kennel beside the doorway, nose twitching above the wooden rail. Dust rested on every coil of machinery, while subtle lines of rust marked the metal like brown rivers on a map. Posters that had been printed for a school innovation fair in 1984 still clung to the wall, their corners curled. Mila’s goal seemed simple: wake the miniature water-wheel engine that her grandfather had displayed decades earlier. If she had waited for an expert, the model would have stayed silent, so her hands explored first.
Several small gears had been corroded by damp air after a pipe burst last winter; the teeth refused to turn. Mila tapped them with the handle of a brush, then dripped oil along each joint, but the belt snapped as soon as she cranked the flywheel. A shoelace replaced the belt for one rotation before slipping free. She searched again and uncovered a thin film reel; its perforated edge gripped the cogs well enough for another attempt. The engine coughed, spat flakes of rust, and the wheel turned a quarter circle before jamming against a pebble lodged inside the channel. Mila tilted the base, shook the frame, and the pebble fell out. Bruno’s ears rose; the latch on his kennel had been loosened by the vibration, and he trotted in, tail brushing tins of paint.
With the obstacle gone, steam hissed through a narrow pipe, and the wheel finally completed a full spin. Water from a tiny reservoir trickled down curved paddles, splashing onto Bruno’s paws and scattering cold droplets in every direction. The dog bounded back, sending a paint tin rolling under a bench while the reel flickered silver light across the ceiling. Gears clicked, pistons slid, and the long-sleeping model steadied into a rhythmic pulse. Water dripped from the wheel and tapped against the floorboards.
