English 원문
Thin light slid between roof tiles and settled on wooden shelves, where curled paper and rusted tins shared space with a pair of cracked running trainers. Dust hung in the air like slow snow; it brushed against Lucia’s sleeve as she lifted a tangled loop of copper wire. A narrow table at the center kept a silent model railway that had not moved for years. The rails showed dark fingerprints of corrosion, and a small control box leaned sideways, its once-green paint faded. Lucia’s shoulders straightened; her goal stood clear—the old circuit would carry power again.
She followed the remembered workflow from childhood, brushing grit away, then pressing the first switch. Nothing stirred. The circuit had been broken by time, so she uncurled the wire, stripped its end, and fitted it under a loosened screw. A spark jumped, yielding results for a single second before dying. She repositioned the trainers under her knees for balance and searched the shelves. A long-forgotten soldering iron waited beside stiff cloth. The iron had been heated by candles once, she recalled, but today a camping stove warmed the tip. Solder glazed the joint; yet the locomotive’s wheels still refused to turn, and the table stayed silent.
Lucia traced every rail until her fingertip met a hairline crack near the tunnel entrance. A fragment of tin foil bridged that gap, and a fresh current swept through the tracks. The locomotive lurched forward, but instead of rolling out, a hidden panel rose, releasing a brass mechanical bird no larger than her palm. Springs inside the bird clicked, wings unfurled, and gears whirred in steady motion. Marco, her younger cousin, stepped closer; his eyebrows rose in unmistakable recognition of the childhood toy their grandfather had promised to finish. The bird rested on the track, wings slowly folding as the gears cooled.
