English 원문
Dust hung in layered bands beside the high windows of the old gym store-room. The wooden floor cooled Mara’s knees as she knelt, tracing paint flakes that had built up like thin bark along a metal locker door. A length of braided cord—once a bright skipping rope—peeked out from the narrow gap below the door. She had promised her younger cousin a game, and the original rope sat inside, faded but familiar. Warm air drifted from a vent, carrying stale chalk and the sharper scent of rubber mats.
Mara set her half-empty coffee cup on a beam of light and pulled. The latch refused to lift; it had been welded tight by time and four layers of grey paint. She continued to strive for even the smallest movement, rocking the handle until her knuckles reddened. If she had brought oil, the latch would have turned easily. A bilingual maintenance manual lay torn on the nearest shelf, its pages curled by humidity; the diagrams showed earlier versions of the same locker, yet offered no direct help. Footsteps echoed outside. Kai stepped in, raised an eyebrow, and without a word pressed his palm beside hers. Their weight combined, metal groaned, and the door finally shuddered open.
Inside, the skipping rope hung limp over a mound of deflated balls. Years of stillness had glued its wooden handles to each other with a film of melted varnish. The friends collaborated again, easing the knot free while plastic beads rattled onto the floor. A sudden snap ran along the inner cord—the rope had grown brittle and split near the center. Mara exhaled through pursed lips, lifted the two shorter lengths, and shrugged. The dusty skipping rope rested across her open palms.
